It is only recently that wollastonite has been identified as an industrial mineral. In fact, there was no study on the economic exploitation of the mineral until the end of World War II. Wollastonite, an industrial mineral, is defined as natural calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3).

Rapid progress in research has proven that wollastonite has many industrial uses for the mineral and many advantages when used as a substitute for traditional minerals. The unifying role of wollastonite in the mixture during manufacturing has created wide areas of application in the American ceramic industry. Some of the many features developed with the use of Wollastonite are as follows; It increases the product strength and allows the firing time to be significantly reduced in single-firing tiles.

The theoretical composition of wollastonite consists of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. However, it may also be found in nature with iron, manganese or magnesium instead of calcium.

Sectors in which it is used:It is widely used in the production of ceramics, paints, mineral wool, abrasives and insulators.
